The lightweight, streamlined passenger car was a product of the Great Depression. While the heavyweight steel cars built in the teens and 1920s were dependable and often luxurious, their dark colors and solid, battleship-like exteriors did little to lift the spirits at a time when the entire nation needed a pick-me-up. As noted railroad historian John H. White, Jr. put it in The American Railroad Passenger Car, “Some hope during these gloomy years was offered by a new design concept called streamlining. It presented a sleek, modern image of speed and innovation. What had been an obscure technical term in aerodynamics was made into a household word through an astute publicity campaign mounted by several railroad traffic departments. It succeeded in creating a general interest in railroading practically unknown since the opening of the first transcontinental line… According to Railway Age, ‘For the first time in many years, the words ‘sold out’ re-entered the ticket clerk’s vocabulary.’”

This run of O Premier E8s and Passenger Cars provides the modeler with appropriate “trainsets” for each roadname to replicate typical passenger consists that might be found on the prototype.

As the operational lifetime of the E8 locomotive covered from the early 1950s through the 1980s in many cases, several changes were made to their appearance during rebuilds, such as removal of the distinctive “Portholes” when the side panels began to rust through.  This run of E8s features all-new tooling to replicate these “smoothsided” variations where appropriate for owners like Amtrak, who relied heavily on these locomotives in the early 1970s.

Coupled with the Phase 1 paint scheme E8, the Amtrak 4-car set (also in Phase 1 livery), which includes a baggage car, coach, Vista Dome and Observation car, is the perfect starting point to represent a local “section” of what might be a cross-country train.  Adding the 2-car set of a Sleeper and a Diner, as well as a second powered (or unpowered) E8 locomotive completes the typical cars found in an overnight run, and the full-length Vista Dome is a great place to watch the scenery as the train travels across the great expanses of the USA.

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) developed a standard design for 50-ton and 70-ton twin offset open hopper cars starting in the late 1920s. The design was modified in the mid 1930s, and through 1960 over 127,000 cars had been built to AAR specifications. Eastern coal carriers amassed the largest fleets - however, the twin offset hopper design was not limited to coal service, with ore and aggregates also being hauled.

They could also be found operating in a wide range of services including unit coal trains, blocks of loaded cars destined to a large consignee, and even “loose”single cars headed to smaller customers.

During the heyday of rail transport, livestock was routinely shipped in complete trainloads to packing plants throughout the country. The typical stock car was based upon a 40’ box car modified with open slat sides and possibly internal decking for the smaller breeds of animals. Designed primarily for transporting cows and pigs, original stock cars date back to the 1860’s, and could carry up to 20,000 pounds of livestock.

The Rapid Discharge Hopper, designed for heavy, dense loads like sand, gravel, limestone, and other aggregates, was designed and built by the Ortner Freight Car Co. (Now part of the TrinityRail® group). Thanks to its steep 60-degree end sheets and Rapid Discharge hopper door system, the car unloads completely in less than 30 seconds without the need for a car shaker. An entire unit train of these cars can be unloaded in 30 to 60 minutes, whereas other unloading systems could take 4 hours or longer. The design has stood the test of time, as these cars are still in service on many railroads nationwide.

In 1992, GM’s Electro-Motive Division (EMD) introduced the new SD70 Series of engines, which come in the standard direct-current (DC) and alternating-current (AC) models. The SD70 boasts a 32-bit 16mHz control microprocessor named the EM2000. This computer works with the Integrated Cab Electronics (ICE) system to collect, analyze, and display a range of accurate-to-the-second information, such as speed, amps, throttle position, air brake operation, and cab signals.

The 70 Series also employs the HTCR (high-traction three-axle radial) truck that reduces rolling resistance in curves and lateral loads and therefore reduces wear on wheels. These innovations have led to brisk sales of both the SD70M (DC version) and SD70MAC (AC version).

The 40’ Boxcar is widely known as one of the most popular freight cars used by railroads as they transitioned from steam to diesel.
