The Atlas Product Spotlight - HO 42' Coil Car

The Atlas Product Spotlight - HO 42' Coil Car

The increased volume of coiled steel transportation gave rise to a new purpose-built freight car. Previously rolls of coiled-steel had generally traveled in specially equipped gondola cars. In the 1960’s a lighter type of car emerged specifically for hauling coils of steel in an integral trough. The car type gained popularity and eventually over 17,000 cars were built. Atlas’ model replicates a 42’ design with a distinctive fishbelly side sill.

Features Include:

  • Prototypical painting and lettering
  • See-through walks
  • Removable hood
  • Inside floor detail
  • Cut-levers

The Atlas Product Spotlight - HO RS-11 Locomotives

The Atlas Product Spotlight - HO RS-11 Locomotives

The first RS-11s were produced by Alco in early 1956. This locomotive, classified by Alco as model DL-701, was their replacement for the very popular RS-3 road-switcher. Featuring a V-12, 1,800hp 251B diesel engine, the RS-11 was Alco’s answer to EMD’s very successful GP9. The turbocharged RS-11 accelerated faster, had a higher tractive effort rating and typically used less fuel than the competition. It was also quite versatile and could be found in heavy haul freight as well as passenger service.

The largest owner of RS-11’s was Norfolk & Western which purchased a total of 99 units (an additional 35 were added to the fleet after the merger with Nickel Plate). Other major purchasers included Northern Pacific, Pennsylvania and Southern Pacific, all of whom placed repeat orders. With approximately 426 units built for the US and Mexico over 8 years of production, the RS-11 was successful for Alco in that it provided ongoing competition for EMD’s popular road-switchers. A few examples of this model are still in service today and can be found working for various shortlines in the US.

The Atlas Product Spotlight - HO SD35 Locomotives

The Atlas Product Spotlight - HO SD35 Locomotives

Between 1964 and 1966, EMD built a total of 360 six-axle 2,500hp SD35 locomotives. An additional 35 steam generator-equipped SDP35 locomotives were also built during this period. These were all part of EMD’s “35-Series” which also featured the four-axle, 2,250hp GP35 locomotive. All locomotives included the standard EMD 567-series prime mover. A stock model weighed 360,000 pounds, but many roads chose to add weight to increase the locomotive’s tractive effort. From the mid-1960s through the 1980s, the SD-35 could be found in road service on both large and mid-sized roads across the US. Today the number of active units has dwindled to a select few, including those operated by regional railroad Montana Rail Link.

Atlas Acquires Custom Signals

For Immediate Release

December 21, 2023

Hillside, NJ-

Atlas Model Railroad Co Inc, Hillside, NJ announced today the acquisition of Custom Signals of Poughkeepsie, NY. Custom Signals specialized in O scale signal products and building signal systems for layouts.

The asset purchase agreement, finalized on Friday, December 15th, includes in part, the balance of inventory, the Track/Signal Configuration Library, and all Custom Signals tools, comprising molds, dies, designs, plans, and diagrams for all current and proposed products.

Paul Graf, Atlas CEO said, “This purchase will allow the expansion of our signal line from a basic Automatic Block Signaling system (ABS) to a full Absolute Permissive Block Signaling system (APB).  It will grow our N and HO signal products, and offer all customers valuable assistance in building track layouts using the Atlas All Scales Signal System.”

Atlas currently offers an extensive line of products in the Atlas All Scales Signal System. The line was first introduced in the early 2000s while working with Terry Christopher from Custom Signals.  It was revamped in 2019 with an additional line of products for use in N, HO & O scales.  With this purchase we now have a full line of products for use in N, HO and O scales.

These easy-to-install signals and signal system now make it possible to incorporate the reality of the prototype into your scale modeling experience.

The Atlas Product Spotlight - O Trainman® Bay Window Caboose

The Atlas Product Spotlight - O Trainman® Bay Window Caboose

Along with the Extended-Vision body style, the Bay Window Caboose became one of the preferred designs for cabooses built in the 1950s and beyond. It offered improved visibility for better views of the train while in motion as well as modern amenities for the crew. This TRAINMAN model is based upon features of the Southern Pacific C-30-6 bay window cabooses of 1951, but at the same time is representative of the thousands of such cars used on American railroads.

  • Separately-applied see-through roof walk, smoke stack, brake wheel and brake lines
  • Premium die-cast couplers and friction bearing caboose trucks
  • Weighted, detailed underframes
  • Interior lighting with on/off control switch on chassis
  • 2-Rail cars feature 33" scale wheels and body-mounted scale couplers
  • Accurate and colorful decoration
  • Minimum diameter curve: O-31 (3 rail)
  • Minimum radius curve: 24" (2 rail)
