New Jersey commuter service went through a number of phases – from being covered by such railroads as the Erie Lackawanna and Jersey Central to the current operations of New Jersey Transit.  This “transition era” saw a collection of differently painted motive power, including the striking blue, silver and red “Bluebird” E8s in this run, pulling several different styles of coaches (including ex-ATSF Budd cars) in much plainer paint schemes.  However, the unique ex-NYC tavern-lounge car (represented in this run by a single car add-on diner) introduced many of the graphical elements that came to define and refine the NJT image in later years.

In commuter service, E8s, either singly or in tandem, pulled strings of (mostly) coaches between cities and suburban areas.  During the early days of Penn Central, these commuter trains took on a very unique look, as cars from the PRR, New York Central, New Haven and other roads frequently were put into service with minimal changes to their original paint schemes other than the occasional addition of some Penn Central lettering or logos.  The 4-car Penn Central set includes several of the colorful coach schemes that regularly appeared together in trains, even including an ex-New Haven observation!  Adding the 2-car set of coaches in the familiar overall PC Green completes the look of the kaleidoscopic trains pulled routinely behind the plain black locomotives of the PC.

This run includes an homage to the colorful Kansas City Southern as it now becomes part of the new Canadian Pacific Kansas City Railroad.  The “Southern Belle” was the premier streamlined name train on the KCS, featuring a striking dark green, red, and yellow (gold) paint scheme which first appeared on an EMD diesel in June of 1940 (E3 #3).  By 1952, new E8 locomotives took over the “Belle”, including #27.  This locomotive, the cars in the 4-pack, plus the additional sleeper “Colonel Fordyce” represent a complete prototype consist of the Belle from August of 1968, only about one year before the end of passenger service on KCS, and less than 6 months before #27 (and #23) were repainted into the “White Ghost” scheme – the only E8s to wear a different KCS paint scheme since new in the 1950s.  By 1970, E8s #27 and #25 (now rebuilt as an E9m) were sold to the Chicago & North Western Railway, and the era of the colorful passenger name trains became part of railroading history.

The lightweight, streamlined passenger car was a product of the Great Depression. While the heavyweight steel cars built in the teens and 1920s were dependable and often luxurious, their dark colors and solid, battleship-like exteriors did little to lift the spirits at a time when the entire nation needed a pick-me-up. As noted railroad historian John H. White, Jr. put it in The American Railroad Passenger Car, “Some hope during these gloomy years was offered by a new design concept called streamlining. It presented a sleek, modern image of speed and innovation. What had been an obscure technical term in aerodynamics was made into a household word through an astute publicity campaign mounted by several railroad traffic departments. It succeeded in creating a general interest in railroading practically unknown since the opening of the first transcontinental line… According to Railway Age, ‘For the first time in many years, the words ‘sold out’ re-entered the ticket clerk’s vocabulary.’”

The more modern Burlington Northern “hockey stick” and classic Rock Island silver schemes ran in both overnight and local service, and the cars provided in the various sets (with matching locomotives) allow you to represent a number of different trains, and feature an additional coach car included in the 4-pack.

This run of O Premier E8s and Passenger Cars provides the modeler with appropriate “trainsets” for each roadname to replicate typical passenger consists that might be found on the prototype.

As the operational lifetime of the E8 locomotive covered from the early 1950s through the 1980s in many cases, several changes were made to their appearance during rebuilds, such as removal of the distinctive “Portholes” when the side panels began to rust through.  This run of E8s features all-new tooling to replicate these “smoothsided” variations where appropriate for owners like Amtrak, who relied heavily on these locomotives in the early 1970s.

Coupled with the Phase 1 paint scheme E8, the Amtrak 4-car set (also in Phase 1 livery), which includes a baggage car, coach, Vista Dome and Observation car, is the perfect starting point to represent a local “section” of what might be a cross-country train.  Adding the 2-car set of a Sleeper and a Diner, as well as a second powered (or unpowered) E8 locomotive completes the typical cars found in an overnight run, and the full-length Vista Dome is a great place to watch the scenery as the train travels across the great expanses of the USA.
