The Atlas Product Spotlight - O Trainman® PS-4750 Covered Hopper

Pullman Standard’s 4750 cubic foot covered hopper was one of the most successful freight car designs in that company’s history. Over 54,000 of these cars were produced during the latter part of the 1970s and early 1980s. It was the premier grain hauler of the era and is still in use.

Found throughout the country on virtually all of the class 1 rail lines, it is also one of the most leased cars through the Transport Leasing Division of PullmanThe cars were painted a virtual rainbow of colors.

For Immediate Release

November 17, 2023

Hillside, NJ- To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Atlas in 2024, we have partnered with NJ TRANSIT to wrap a prototype locomotive with a brand new paint scheme celebrating 100 years of Atlas. NJ TRANSIT #4503 has been wrapped with commemorative 100th anniversary artwork that was designed in-house at Atlas and will be placed in service on the NJ TRANSIT Raritan Valley Line effective November 17th, 2023.  An official unveiling and press event will be held in New Jersey’s Newark Penn Station on Friday, December 1st at 12:30 PM.  Atlas company officers, employees and NJ TRANSIT leadership will be present for this momentous occasion.

When the newly wrapped NJ TRANSIT #4503 enters service, Atlas will be holding a photography contest for eagle-eyed train enthusiasts who spot and photograph this locomotive traversing the NJ TRANSIT rails.  Details of the contest will be announced soon, so stay tuned to the Atlas website and social media sites for more information.

Last month, Atlas announced a replica model of this commemorative ALP-45DP locomotive along with Bombardier passenger car models decorated in special 100th anniversary paint schemes that celebrate our company’s long history. The offering includes ALP-45DP locomotives, cab cars, multi-level trailers and multi-level trailers with toilets.  The Founders Car multilevel trailer features the years Atlas has been in operation and the names of the founders, Stephan J. Schaffan Sr. and Stephan J. Schaffan Jr.  The cab car features a thank you to our loyal customers and the toilet car is adorned with a cartoon drawing from the Atlas archives of Steve Jr.  Locomotives are available for separate sale and in 3-packs while the cab car and trailers are only sold in 3-packs.  While these models are no longer offered for guaranteed pre-order, orders can still be placed and will be fulfilled while supplies remain.

Atlas Tool Company was founded by Stephan Schaffan Sr. in 1924 as a general machine shop in a small garage at 330 Waverly Avenue in Newark, New Jersey. His son, Stephan Schaffan Jr. joined him in the business in 1933. As a frequent visitor to the local hobby shop, he would often ask the owner if there was anything he could do to earn some extra spending money. Tired of listening to his requests, the hobby-store owner threw some model railroad track parts his way and said, “Here, see if you can improve on this”.  In those days, railroad modelers had to assemble and build everything from scratch. Steve Jr. created a “switch kit” which sold so well, that the entire family worked on them in the basement at night, while doing business as usual in the machine shop during the day.

Steve Jr.’s accomplishments include engineering the stapling of rail to fiber track, inventing the first practical rail joiner and pre-assembled turnouts and flexible track—all of which helped to popularize model railroading and assisted in the creation of a mass-market hobby. As the business grew, their manufacturing needs went beyond what the small garage could provide, so in 1947 Steve and his father had the first factory built in Hillside, New Jersey at 413 Florence Avenue. On September 30th, 1949, Atlas Tool Company Inc. was officially incorporated as a New Jersey company.

Over time, Atlas has expanded their product line to include more than just track. At your local hobby store you can pick up Atlas track, locomotives, freight cars, signals, lighting and more in HO, N, O and even Z scale.

The Atlas Product Spotlight - O 42' Coil Cars

The Atlas Product Spotlight - O 42' Coil Cars

The increased volume of coiled steel transportation gave rise to a new purpose-built freight car. Previously rolls of coiled-steel had generally traveled in specially equipped gondola cars. In the 1960s a lighter type of car emerged specifically for hauling coils of steel in an integral trough. The car type gained popularity and eventually over 17,000 cars were built. Atlas’ model replicates a 42’ design with a distinctive fishbelly side sill.

  • Prototypical painting and lettering
  • See-through walks
  • Removable hood
  • Inside floor detail
  • Cut-levers
  • Includes 4 coils (2 small & 2 large)

The Atlas Product Spotlight - O Premier 8,000 Gallon Tank Car

The Atlas Product Spotlight - O Premier 8,000 Gallon Tank Car

For most of the steam and early diesel eras, tank cars followed a standard design: an 8,000-11,000 gallon tank perched on a flatcar-like underframe. Beginning in the mid-1950s, however, a new design took hold: the tank itself became the structural backbone of the car, eliminating the need for a full-length underframe and making bigger tank diameters possible. But not every shipper needed the much larger capacities that the new tank cars offered. Hence the advent of these “beer can” tank cars in the mid-1960s, with capacities similar to pre-war tankers. They proved ideal for customers who didn’t want larger shipments, and also for transporting a wide variety of heavier, denser liquids including industrial acids and foodstuffs. For modelers, they’re an ideal counterpoint to longer cars in a modern freight train.

The Atlas Product Spotlight - O Premier 3-Bay Centerflow Hoppers

The Atlas Product Spotlight - O Premier 3-Bay Centerflow Hoppers

Prior to the Centerflow, the typical covered hopper was little more than a coal hopper with a roof. Dry products such as salt were loaded through roof hatches and unloaded by gravity through doors in the floor. Like most freight cars of their era, these cars had a center sill. This support beam ran down the middle of the car between the left and right sets of unloading doors, and that led to problems in emptying the car.

The Centerflow’s key innovation was the elimination of the center sill by relocating the car’s main support beams to the bottom edge of each side. This enabled the discharge hopper doors to be located along the centerline of the car, allowing for easier, more complete unloading and banishing the problem of caking on the center sill. In addition, the car sides were curved to allow for more complete filling of the car. Stub center sills at each end provided a place to mount the trucks. The Centerflow was the first larger-capacity covered hopper designed for grain and products of similar density.

The Atlas Product Spotlight - O F40PH Locomotives

The Atlas Product Spotlight - O F40PH Locomotives

The F40PH was designed for Amtrak as a commuter and medium-haul engine, to complement its long-haul fleet of SDP40F diesels. But when the SDP40Fs fell from grace due to poor reliability, a rough ride and derailment issues, the F40PH became the backbone of Amtrak’s locomotive fleet for decades.

Introduced in 1976, the F40PH was essentially a passenger version of the mid-1960s GP40 freight diesel. It shared the earlier engine’s turbocharged V-16 3000 hp (later uprated to 3200 hp) model 645 motor, and added an HEP (head-end power) generator for passenger lights, heat and air conditioning. An enclosed cowl afforded en-route, all-weather access to the F40PH’s engine room if necessary. In short order, commuter railroads across the United States and Canada followed Amtrak into EMD’s order books for this versatile, reliable engine.

Did You Know? The F40PHs were nicknamed “Screamers” because their engines run at a high rpm even at rest, in order to power the HEP generator that keeps the passenger cars comfortable.
